Explore St. Louis

Here are the 3 things you must do while you’re in St. Louis, recommended by KDP Chapter Counselors in the St. Louis area:

.

The Gateway Arch

Just 8 years after KDP held Convo in St. Louis for the third time in 1940, a nationwide design competition was launched to determine what shape a new monument would take in a prominent national park along the Mississippi River. The Gateway Arch was completed in 1965. There are plenty of ways to explore Gateway Arch National Park, and we recommend you consider the following opportunities:
  • Explore The Museum at the Arch – Inside this free museum, you can trace more than 200 years of stories of the Native Americans, explorers, pioneers, and rebels who made America possible. This innovative and interactive museum features six themed exhibit areas that celebrate America’s pioneering spirit.
  • Tram Ride to the Top – This unique tram will lift you 630 feet up to the top of the tallest monument in the United States. Tickets are only $17 and are available on the official Gateway Arch website. We recommend booking in advance, as tickets sell out early.
The Gateway Arch National Park is mere steps from the Hyatt Regency.

St. Louis Union Station

Opening 17 years before KDP was founded in 1911, St. Louis Union Station was once one of the largest and busiest passenger rail terminals in the world, seeing as high as 100,000 passengers in a day in the 1940s. To put its popularity in perspective, the St. Louis airport only sees approximately 35,000 passengers each day. Today, it is home to more than 13,000 animals at the St. Louis Aquarium, the 200-foot St. Louis Wheel, a carousel, an 18-hole mini-golf course, the mirror maze, a ropes course, the train park, and several restaurants.

Saint Louis Zoo

One of the city’s many free attractions, the Saint Louis Zoo is home to more than 16,000 animals (many of which are endangered) and has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading zoological parks. In November, the zoo’s hours will be 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (CT).

If you plan a trip to the zoo, consider visiting one of the additional attractions located in the same area—historic Forest Park—such as the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, or the Saint Louis Science Center
