If you are a new teacher, The New Teacher’s Guide to Overcoming Common Challenges: Curated Advice From Award-Winning Teachers should be one of your top resources.

But if you are a veteran teacher, The New Teacher’s Guide to Overcoming Common Challenges: Curated Advice From Award-Winning Teachers should still be one of your top resources.

This latest release from Kappa Delta Pi, edited by Dr. Anna M. Quinzio-Zafran and Dr. Elizabeth A. Wilkins, includes advice curated by 130 accomplished and successful educators from rural, suburban, and urban learning environments. The book is organized into 11 sections:

  1. Teaching During a Pandemic
  2. Classroom Setup and Management
  3. Culturally Responsive Teaching
  4. Curriculum and Instruction
  5. Differentiation
  6. English Learners
  7. Professionalism/School Culture
  8. Navigating Teacher Evaluation
  9. Relationship Building/Communication
  10. Student Assessment and Data Literacy
  11. Work-Life Balance

Each section has several essays written by National Board-Certified Teachers, National Teachers of the Year, and other educators. Although intended for K-12, this guidebook features succinct, practical essays that are applicable also to postsecondary faculty. For instance, I found the article, “Eleven Practices to Consider When Grading” by Dr. Kelly Brooksher of Georgia Southern University, rich in different approaches that could be beneficial for my online college courses. This article is part of the Student Assessment and Data Literacy section.

Several articles include useful web links for teachers to consider visiting. One of my favorite articles with plenty of suggested links was “Five Effective Tech Tools for Learning” by Dr. Gary Miller at the University of Texas at Tyler. This article, included in the Curriculum and Instruction section, shares links to free, innovative apps that could help increase student engagement and creativity.

Regardless of the number of years you have served as a teacher, The New Teacher’s Guide to Overcoming Common Challenges: Curated Advice From Award-Winning Teachers deserves a place on your desk.
